How to play Snake
Neon Snake is the classic snake game with an arcade glow. You control a snake on a 20×20 grid — use the arrow keys (or WASD, or swipe on a phone) to steer it. Every red apple you eat is worth 10 points and makes your snake one segment longer.
The catch: with every few apples the snake gets faster (watch the speed meter climb from 1 to 10), and the longer it gets, the easier it is to trap yourself. The game ends when you hit a wall or bite your own tail. Press space to pause at any moment, and your best score is saved automatically in your browser.
Tips for a higher score
- Stay near the middle early on — edges and corners are where accidents happen.
- Move in wide S-shaped sweeps instead of tight loops so your tail can always follow.
- When the snake gets long, approach each apple along the wall farthest from your body.
- Never chase an apple you can't steer away from — circling back is faster than restarting.
FAQ
Is this snake game free?
Yes — completely free, no download and no sign-up. It runs entirely in your browser and is supported by ads.
Does it work on phones and tablets?
Yes. The board scales to your screen and you steer by swiping anywhere on it. On desktop, use the arrow keys or WASD, and space to pause.
What happens when I hit a wall?
The game is over — this version uses classic rules, walls are deadly. Your final score is compared to your best, and you can restart instantly with one tap.
Why does the snake speed up?
Every 4 apples raises the speed level by one (up to 10), shortening the step interval from 160 ms to about 60 ms. Higher speed doesn't change points — but longer snakes rack up points faster.
